Captain’s Sheet- Captains are responsible to get their teams to understand all of this. Teams will be held to these rules and policies.
Team fee ($50) must be in by Thursday, February 13, 2025. Once the team pays, they will go on the website and will be official. No venmo, etc. Cash only. This is how we buy prizes, but also teams that are invested, show up, even though it's a small investment. That's roughly $7 per person on a team of 7 or 5 dollars per person on a team of 10.
Team rosters will be frozen after games on Friday, March 7. No additions to rosters can be made after that date. You may need to add players before the deadline when you see who shows up and who doesn't. Have paying members who you know are almost always going to come and have backups in case someone cannot come one day. Using a player that has played on another team already disqualifies the team in the contest.
Make sure you have enough boys and girls to form a team every day. Only players on your roster will be allowed to play for your team. Adding unclaimed players prior to any contest through March 7 is allowed. Just report them to Mr. Cook and he will take note and it's official. Not reporting use of a new player prior to battle can result in forfeit. It is not hard to ask Mr. Cook to add a roster spot. I always have my folder and a pencil and I update the website daily. Using players from another team will result in a forfeit. Once a player has played for a team, they are ineligible for another.
We are lucky GHS gym classes will set up nets. Teams playing last games will be responsible for taking nets down.
Your game starts right after the completion of the prior game. The time on the schedule is the schedule, but be ready early if we are ahead of schedule. Be ready for your game to start early. Failure to be present when the prior game ends may result in forfeit.
Teams may ask anyone to referee a game as long as both teams agree. Teachers are the best choice. Everyone else should NOT shout "carry" or "net" because we do not want players to unnecessarily stop playing. Playing teams do not call fouls. A neutral ref calls it.
Referee's call is final. In the tournament all games will have a staff ref.
Matching team shirts are optional.
Ask for clarification on a rule if you do not understand the rules explanations here or when you see the rule in action. Some teams do not read the rules here and then act surprised when called out by a teacher or experienced player. Read these rules below and try to understand them!
Rules:
Rally score games to 25
Win by 2 until straight up at 30
6 vs. 6
For 4 males, 2 female minimum on court
If playing with one female, max 4 total players
3 hits per side and use them
- Blocks do not count as hits. Even the person who blocks can hit right after that. Otherwise double hits are illegal
- Unintentional double hits are still double hits and result in a dead ball and loss of point
- Getting hit in the body or head counts as a hit and you may not intentionally hit the ball after that.
- Blocking/attacking a serve is illegal. (leaving feet in front row and returning the serve to the other side)
Kicking the ball is legal
Play the ball off the net. The net is live even with serves
The line is in
Stepping on the line or over the line on a serve is a service error
Overhand or underhand serves are legal
Spiking from the back line is legal only if the hitter leaves their feet before stepping over the middle line.
Teams must rotate properly (person before server rotates out and sub rotates in. once a specific rotation starts, it must be maintained except for in case of injury, and in that case that person is merely deleted. Adding a 5th and or 6th midgame is legal). Clockwise rotation.
You can play the ball off the following things on your own side, but you cannot hit it off these if it redirects to the other side.
Basketball apparatus
partition
Ceiling
other foreign objects
No carrying
Ref’s call regardless
No open hands can be used on low hits unless the hit is "crisp"
On high hits the ball cannot be “palmed” or “thrown”, it must be “hit”
